Dr. Coulter specialized in early intervention, literacy issues and staff development. She helped launch the literacy track in the M.A. in education program. She organized workshops with national writers and scholars that brought recognition to EMU’s education department. Coulter served as president of the Virginia State Reading Association and was awarded Phil Delta Kappa’s “Distinguished Service in Education” award from the association’s Shenandoah Valley chapter.
After officially retiring, Coulter continued to teach graduate courses at EMU for several years and continued summer reading clinics for public school teachers. She served on the Massanutten Regional Library board for six years and volunteers with the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival and Wintergreen Performing Arts Festival. She also designed her dream retirement home. Coulter’s numerous travels include retracing her mother’s missionary childhood in China.
