In addition to chairing the chemistry department for many years, Dr. Kauffman is a Renaissance man who is skilled and conversant in a broad range of areas such as philosophy, theology, music, gardening and sports. His academic contributions extended beyond his specialty of organic chemistry to the pre-professional health sciences and the sciences in general. The high standards he set for his students and his philosophy of providing hands-on experiences helped create a chemistry program recognized for its rigor and integrity. Colleagues and students often commented on Kauffman’s ability to effectively communicate complex and difficult concepts.
In retirement, Kauffman continued his many extra-curricular activities, including gardening. He is active in the American Rhododendron Society.
